Part I, Chapter 1 — Columns of Light
What you feel is real
Most people felt something as a child — a knowing, a presence, a light in someone’s eyes — and had no one to tell. And somewhere along the way they learned that it was better to keep it to themselves. That it was a little strange. A little too much. Not quite serious. And so they folded it up small and carried it alone, sometimes for thirty or forty years, wondering quietly if they had imagined the whole thing.
If that is you, let me say the one thing I most want to say in this book:
You did not imagine it. What you feel is real.
You are not too much, and you are not alone, and you are not behind. You simply had a knowing that the world around you didn’t have room for. That is not the same as being wrong. Often it is the opposite.

You’ve heard this before
You have heard it before. Be present. Breathe. Come alive. The words are everywhere now — printed on cups, stitched onto cushions, posted and reposted until they mean almost nothing.
So let me say the honest thing first: a sentence like that can be an empty sticker. Something we nod at and scroll past. I have done it myself.
And yet the very same words, when you actually live them, hold the deepest truth I know.
The difference is not in the sentence. It is in you.
It is one thing to read I am here. It is another to truly stop — to take one full breath, and with your whole openness, your whole creativity, to mean it. To say, from somewhere real: yes. I am here. Come what may.
That is not a slogan anymore. That is a ceremony.
And no one can do it for you.

You make your own door
People will tell you there is a way. The way. A single door you are supposed to find and walk through — and if you miss it, you have somehow failed.
I don’t believe that anymore.
There are so many doors. Some are old and famous — the ones with names, the traditions, the teachers, the medicines. I have walked through many of them, and they are beautiful. But not one of them is the door. They are simply ways in.
And here is the part almost no one tells you:
You can make your own.
Your own door, in the shape of your own life. A candle in the morning. A walk. A question you finally dare to ask out loud. An ordinary hour where you stop, and truly look.
Behind each one is a whole world you haven’t met yet. That is not something to be afraid of.
That is what it means to be alive.

You can begin again
We think we are born only once.
But I have come to believe we are born again and again — every morning, every breath, every time we choose to step back into our own life instead of the story we were told about it.
The first time, you didn’t get to choose. This time, you do.
You can put down who you were yesterday. You can let the old fear finish its sentence, and not answer it. You can turn, gently, toward what makes you feel alive — and begin there.
Nothing grand is required. Just one breath, taken on purpose. One small yes to being here.
That is a ceremony too. Maybe the truest one.
Breathe in. And begin again.
